Bar Luna at Casa Luna

Uncovering a largely overlooked chapter of history, The Battle for Bali chronicles the violent guerrilla war that erupted between Balinese resistance fighters and returning Dutch colonisers after World War II. Drawing on extensive archival and field research, author Anne-Lot Hoek paints a vivid picture of this struggle for independence, revealing shocking stories of oppression, betrayal and hidden terror camps, but also of fierce resistance and friendship. Join us for the launch and a fascinating conversation with Anne-Lot Hoek and journalist Ni Ketut Sudiani about the process of bringing this crucial chapter of Bali's history to light. Also featuring in the talk will be AA Nanik Suryani, granddaughter of national hero I Gusti Ngurah Rai, and Mangu Putra.
